Useful Tips |
| Scenic drives - by Sven Cogh from Hungary |
| Despite an end in sight to country’s 25 year civil war, the northeastern region is still off limits but if you’re looking for nature and a place to escape the tourists, head for the Yala West national parks with its rugged scenery and abundance of wildlife. It’s located in the southeast and easily accessible by car or bus.

| Speed limit - by Randy from America |
| The traffic is slow throught the country, especially near populated areas. I actually got up to 100 Klm per hour for a short distance driving towards Ratnapura. In five years of visiting Sri Lanka, that was my peak! You can plan trips based on an average rate 30 to 50 Klm per hour only. Considering you have a mix of vehicles on the roads (Three Wheelers, Motorcycles, Bicycles, Walkers, Reckless Buses, Heavy Trucks, and an occasional Elephant-Yes!)and all these vehicles are slow moving, so agressive drivers have extreme stress from being held up by all this, so you need a large amount of patience! I drive everywhere I go-after I learned how to judge driving on the opposite side-and I enjoy my trips, so be prepared to pass a lot of vehicles, and HONK forever!

| If you are looking for a Scenic drive then Kandy-Nuwara Elliya comes highly recommended. It's a snake route to Nuwara Elliya, and it is dangerous as it is very narrow road. There are no barriers stop you going over the edge of the road. Don't let that put you off though. My advise is to hire a local driver to take you up there. Believe you me you will be rewarded with fantastic views. |

| If you are driving in Sri Lanka the best tip I can give you is it is important that you use the horn to make other road users aware of your presence. You think I am joking. Seriously, it is quite all right to use the car horn in Sri Lanka. Especially when you are approaching a bend or junction or even over taking. It may be rude to honk in most contries but in Sri Lanka it is completely the opposite. Have a safe drive. |
